The After School Corporation (TASCORP)

The After School CorporationDescription: The After School Corporation (TASCORP) - To support the out-pouring of interest and increased demand to utilize service learning as a strategy to combat childhood obesity, The After School Corporation (TASCORP) seeks to expand the Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative using web 2.0 technology. TASCORP proposes to develop a BHC website that will deliver and facilitate the exchange of information on service-learning and obesity prevention/health and fitness via an array of web 2.0 applications aimed to engage 3 major constituent audiences:
  • Youth: blogging, video streaming, photo yearbook, project exchange
  • Youth workers/program staff/afterschool practitioners: best practices database, resources and reflection tools, a program specific calendar with on-line training and service events, online registration tools, social bookmarking, and the monthly newsletter, The Vitamin
  • Parents and community members/organizations: interactive BHC and service learning information including the BHC curriculum, parent and training guides, a healthy recipe exchange and obesity prevention database
The new website will expand program capacity while encouraging youth to feel connected to a larger service learning community. Youth participants will develop website content related to service-learning, health, nutrition, fitness, and obesity-prevention. The challenge of physically convening youth and stakeholders from diverse geographic regions will be addressed via an interactive space to congregate on-line.  The website will also reach a vast audience of afterschool/youth development practitioners who, while adopting service-learning as an obesity prevention strategy, will further the CNCS strategic goal of engaging 3 million youth from disadvantaged circumstances in service.
