These efforts will include fundraising activities, research, and grant-writing. The VISTA member will develop systems for resources and fund development that will build capacity, expand services and promote sustainability. These efforts include: development of creative/imaginative fundraising activities/events, develop strategies for corporate sponsorships, manage donor database, and grantwriting. Membership Development (AmeriCorps Vista Member) This VISTA project focuses on expanding the organization's publicity and resources by creating a membership drive; targeting individuals, organizations, and businesses to become members of Saving Our Sisters, Inc. The VISTA member will help develop and implement the membership structure for Saving Our Sisters, Inc. The membership efforts will include: creating and disseminating innovative promotional recruitment materials; conducting membership campaigns and drives; and managing the membership database. Organization Information The mission of Saving Our Sisters is to provide a safe, drug free residence for women who want to recover from drug and alcohol addiction. Saving Our Sisters, Inc. was founded in August 2006 and operates with a volunteer staff of 2 (1 full time, 1 part time) and community volunteers. In efforts to move residents from poverty to self efficacy, each resident completes a needs assessment form. Our staff develops a recovery plan tailored to individual needs. We help women obtain identification cards, social service assistance, healthcare, GEDs, bank accounts, employment, legal assistance, and long term housing. The residents are required to participate in the community association meetings, clean ups, and 12 Step meetings. We provide Employment Readiness, Financial Management, Relapse Prevention, Conflict Resolution, Nutrition and Wellness workshops for our residents and larger groups. The surrounding community of Saving Our Sisters, Inc. is east Baltimore, where recovery from substance abuse has been identified as a critical need. The shortage of funding available for affordable residential treatment makes it harder for this community to see long term abstinence from recovering addicts and alcoholics. Substance abuse recidivism after 28-day in patient treatment programs is higher for women. Thus, there is a need to develop, evaluate and expand lower cost, residential care options for substance abusers that want to recover. Saving Our Sisters, Inc. illustrates a community-based approach toward substance abuse abstinence. In our program design, residents have a greater opportunity to develop a sense of competence toward maintaining abstinence by receiving support from peers. The involvement of the individual in the course of action plan after a 28 day in patient treatment may encourage the individual to learn how to cope effectively and independently with stressful situations that promote substance abuse. This sense of self-efficacy will in turn reduce the risk of relapse when women would otherwise return to former high-risk situations. With the support of the VISTA members, we can secure the necessary financial and membership resources required to expand our outreach and education to better equip more women with the tools necessary for long term recovery. Benefits: AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader Living Allowance $4,725 Education Award or $2,400 cash stipend upon completion of term of service Health coverage Federal loan forbearance Application Process: Submit an on-line application through the MyAmeriCorps Portal at http://my.americorps.gov.
