Apply for the Civic Mission of Schools Award
The California Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools is sponsoring an awards and recognition program for schools that support the Six Promising Approaches to Civic Education (30K doc). The intent is to have at least one awarded school for each of the Superintendent's 12 regions. The application and cover sheet is due April 18th (850K doc). See the "Civic Mission of Schools Report" (653K pdf) for background information.

GreenWorks! Grants Awarded!
Project Learning Tree's GreenWorks! and esurance® have awarded 19 environmental service-learning grants. The students in the following communities will design native plant gardens, restore streams and riparian habitat, construct hiking trails, start composting projects, and investigate alternative sources of energy.

Youth Service America Create a "Semester of Service!"
The Semester of Service is a new, public-private strategy to help young people find their voice, take action, and have impact on the most critical problems facing the world. In January 2008, Youth Service America and the Corporation for National and Community Service are encouraging students, ages 5-25, to develop a 14 week service-learning project that launches on the Martin Luther King Day of Service (January 21, 2008) and culminates on the weekend of Global Youth Service Day (April 25-27, 2008).

Council for Corporate and School PartnershipsGet $10,000 for Your Partnership
The National School and Business Partnerships Awards, created by the Council for Corporate and School Partnerships, recognize strong school-business partnerships that improve the academic, social, or physical well-being of students. Partnerships involving public schools and/or districts and businesses are eligible to apply. The Council will make six awards; those selected will receive $10,000 to support partnership efforts. Applications are due by January 30.

M L K DayMartin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Rescuing Recess Volunteer Challenge!
Now through June 2008, Rescuing Recess is recruiting volunteers all over the country to serve as recess monitors at their local elementary school. One school in every state and DC that completes the most volunteer hours has a chance to win up to $2500 in cash grants and to compete for one national grant of $25,000! Youth Leaders for Literacy
Youth Leaders for LiteracyYouth Leaders for Literacy is an initiative of the National Education Association and Youth Service America to help youth direct their enthusiasm and creativity into reading-related service projects. The NEA will be awarding 20 grants of $500 each to youth-led literacy projects that begin March 3, Read Across America Day and end April 25-27, Global Youth Service Day. Deadline: October 26, 2007.

Three Exciting Opportunities for Youth!
Youth Service America (YSA) has three new opportunities:

Get Funding for Youth-led Service Projects
Youth Power GrantsThe Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and Youth Service America (YSA) are pleased to announce YouthPower grants of up to $1,000 to support youth-led service projects.   These grants support youth in foster care (ages 5-18) and youth who have recently transitioned out of foster care (ages 19-25) in planning and implementing service projects in their community. Application deadline is October 1, 2007.

Global Debate for High School Students
Participating students will research the topic (Resolved: Market mechanisms are preferable to regulatory approaches in reducing carbon emissions) and prepare clear, persuasive arguments for both sides of the issue. All students who attend the debate will vote for the side they felt was most compelling and persuasive. Votes will be tallied and the results will appear on the The People Speak site in early November. Debates will take place October 12-22, 2007.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
These awards honor young people in middle level and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their communities and were created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Over the past 12 years, the program has honored more than 75,000 young volunteers at the local, state, and national level.

Summer of ServiceSummer of Service
Summer of Service is a national coalition of major youth-serving organizations that are committed to engaging youth in service during the summer months and recognize the potential of youth to identify issues, develop projects, and provide lasting benefits to the communities in which they live through volunteer service. Any organization that deals with youth ages 5 to 21 is encouraged to become part of the initiative.

Sycamore Service Award
Indiana State University and the Lt. Governor of Indiana have announced the "Sycamore Service Award" competition for high schools in Indiana.
The program will provide Sycamore Service Scholarships of $1,000 per year to graduating seniors from nine high schools and will be renewable for up to four years. See the news release.

High School Students to Debate National Service
For the 2006-07 school year, the National Forensic League is having high school debaters examine national service. As they set out to take and defend their positions on the debate topic, students may explore these Clearinghouse resources on Learn and Serve America and other national service programs.

Spirit of Service Awards
The Honorees, from Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America, were selected because they exemplified the spirit of national service, demonstrated exceptional service or leadership, and served as role models for others. See the list of Honorees.

Over One Million Students Supported

Cross-Sector Leaders Unveil Major New Plan to Close Mentoring Gap
Spearheaded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and MENTOR, leaders from government, nonprofit, and corporate America have launched a national campaign to close the mentoring gap. Read more.
