Abstract:
Barber talks about the need to teach students about liberty and what is required and expected of citizens. Service-learning can be a tool to teach citizenship. He also touches upon some of the debates within the field of service-learning such as, should service be mandatory, should service take place in class or out, does service teach philanthropy or citizenship, and should students be involved in the planning of service.
