Abstract:
To reverse African-American youngsters' low achievement pattern, one Maryland Middle School initiated the African-American Student Achievement Program. The plan devised strategies to improve African-American students' academic achievement, school participation, and academic self-esteem. Activities include a homework club, MESA (math, engineering, and science program), mentoring, tutoring, and field trips to visit historic sites or to hear speakers who are exemplary African-American role models.
