Abstract:

Today a third generation of studies are being conducted using service-learning. It is characterized by a higher quality of research design from its predecessors. This article introduces four current studies: 1) The Center for Human Resources at Brandeis University and Abt Associates are conducting a study of 18 middle and high school-based service-learning programs receiving funding from the Corporation for National Service Learn and Serve America grant. 2) The Center for Human Resources is conducting a 2.5 study of the Active Citizenship Today (ACT) program operated by the Close UP Foundation and Constitutional Rights Foundation. 3) The Helper Model study is being conducted by the City University of New York's Center for Advanced Study in Education. 4) Search Institute is working in partnership with the National Youth Leadership Council to study how high-quality middle school service-learning programs might affect academic success as well as citizenship and personal development.
