Abstract:
Lincoln Elementary School in Springfield, Massachusetts, began to integrate service-learning into their curriculum in 1987. They began by adopting a "good citizenship" theme; students studied what it means to be a good citizen and selected exemplary citizens from their own community to celebrate. The program grew as students and teachers sought ways to help themselves become good citizens. While service is not mandatory at Lincoln, it is the norm.
