The results from the 1996 Wingspread Summit indicated that service learning and school to work contain certain challenges as they attempt to cooperate, including differing goals and attitudes; distinct histories and guiding principles; skill in collaborating with organizations of diverse cultures, structures, and polices; necessity of training in collaboration and facilitation; developed and integrative leadership; effective models of successful practices; effective tools for assessing and promoting practice; necessary time and planning. The summit concluded with these recommendations: define the purpose and links to learning; explore new structures and actions; engage all stakeholders in planning, implementation, and evaluation; articulate a shared, compelling vision; create and share effective processes and practices via training and technical assistance providers; demonstrate the value added; focus on the learner and the learning; and communicate and collaborate between governmental agencies.
