The authors propose a new definition of leadership that challenges every individual, whether or not in a traditional leadership position, to find a way to make a positive difference in the world. Students in higher education must have the opportunity to display and demonstrate care, courage, ethical sensitivity, responsibility, and the ability to empower others. When community service is linked with leadership development, these traits may be best promoted. Delve and Rice offer concrete examples of merging service-learning and leadership development by the use of retreats and workshops, orientation programs, credit and noncredit leadership courses, student recognition, and "Greek" organization and campus activities.
