Abstract:
The authors present the following challenge: to acknowledge the relationships in our world and to dissolve the artificial barriers that support mutual isolation and excessive competition. In the educational sphere, this may be attempted by actively involving students in their communities in order to develop in them a better understanding of the needs and realities of their world. The authors review the moral development theories of Kohlbert, Perry, and Gilligan as they relate to students and their choice to serve. They propose a model for service learning which includes exploration, clarification, realization, activation, and internalization. (SH)
