Abstract:
Giles attempts to answer the role of service-learning in higher education curriculum by first answering what the social and political context of American higher education is and how it is affecting curricular reform, what is service-learning and how it relates to community service, and the role of the academy in promoting knowing and doing in society. He cites John Dewey's theory of experience as a foundation for service-learning in today's college curriculum. This principle suggests that service-learning shapes a curriculum that connects the experiences of students to broader issues of society. Giles also lists 16 service-learning curricular experiences.
