The author notes how high school students at Malcolm Shabazz City High School (Madison, WI) helped teach the Autobiography of Malcolm X to middle school students at Sherman Middle School (Madison, WI). Kavaloski hoped to demonstrate academic achievement by the high school students. Each high school student participant had three reflection periods built into his or her service. Kavaloski concludes that the service-learning added a new relevance and importance to the high school curriculum and successfully met the wide variety of learning styles and cultural backgrounds of the high school students. Service-learning allowed the students to develop leadership, research, planning, assessing, and communication skills. (SH)
