Abstract: 

The essential idea of alternative assessment models is for students to create a product and reflect on it. Reflective self evaluation should be an integral part of every classroom assignment, not an obligatory afterthought. Developing consensus about performance standards is truly challenging for middle schoolers and teachers (15 references).
