Abstract:

This compendium provides specific examples of how service-learning is being integrated into teacher education at the undergraduate and graduate level. In some cases, entire courses have been designed to prepare teachers to use service-learning methodologies in their classroom. In other examples, service-learning activities have been integrated into existing courses. Chapter One provides a brief introduction to service-learning. Chapter Two presents four in-depth case studies of service-learning in teacher education and includes numerous attachments such as projects, handbooks, assessment scales, syllabi and management forms. Chapter Three provides brief descriptive highlights of service learning and teacher education from a variety of higher education institutions around the country. Chapter Four presents detailed course syllabi from six teacher education institutions. Chapter Five includes the ASLER Program Standards and Standards for Service Learning Teachers.
