Prepared as part of a project to promote service-learning activities at community colleges, this source book presents essays by college faculty detailing service-learning models and strategies. Following a brief foreword, an introductory essay describes the project, indicating that it involves a team of five faculty members who have built service-learning teams on their own campuses and held training sessions with over 300 faculty at other campuses. Five models of service-learning are then presented through the following essays:
- Collaboration in Action: Service-Learning at Middlesex Community College, by Pamela Edington and Donna K. Duffy
- Civic Democracy and Civil Diversity, by Robert W. Franco
- Service-Learning at the Community College of Rhode Island, by Jim Glasson
- One Model of Integrating Service-Learning into the Curriculum, by C. David Lisman
- Historical Overview and Current Models of Service-Learning at Mesa Community College, by Sue McAleavey
Lessons learned from the field are then described with respect to overall project strategies that have proven successful and effective conceptual and operational strategies for developing service-learning programs. The final section provides the following five case studies detailing individual faculty members' experiences in developing service-learning activities:
- Journey to a Shifting Paradigm, by Donna K. Duffy
- Cultivating the Spirit of Service, by Robert W. Franco
- Service and Social Transformation, by Jim Glasson
- A Civic and Community Development Model, by C. David Lisman
- The Dean's Dilemmas, by Sue McAleavey
