Abstract:
The National Assessment of Educational Progress showed that slightly more than twenty percent of youth in grades four, eight, and twelve received a proficient grade on a standardized civics test. In this editorial, Salomone offers some options to bolster understanding of democratic citizenship, such as service-learning, focused school-wide missions, and maintaining a democratic community in the school.
