Abstract:
Saltmarsh has applied service-learning to the course that he teaches, "Approaches to History: The Individual and Society in Democratic America". Students read and interpret scholarly works in American cultural history and then engage in community service experiences in neighborhoods near the university. Journal writing and seminars related to the service provide a connection to history, community, and citizenship. The course syllabus is included.
