Abstract:

Argues that a "hidden moral curriculum" in schools places too much emphasis on the individual and on moral reflection abstracted from a community context. The result is that students have difficulty connecting what they learn in school with what they do in their communities. Suggests that the service-learning model provides students with a reflective process that leads them from isolation and limited commitment to concern for the needs of others, and outlines four areas where the community can make a contribution to the values of education of secondary-school students.
