Abstract:
Shumer and Cook compare data from 1984 research with information from two studies of service and service-learning completed in 1997, focusing on service in high schools. Service-learning has gone from a small dot on the educational landscape to occupying an important place in the educational system. In 1997, more than 12 million secondary students engaged in service activities, and almost 5.5 million connected their service to the curriculum through service-learning.
