Abstract:

Service-learning, carried out in the context of the social studies curriculum, has the potential to foster the skills and sense of civic duty necessary to maintain effective, participatory democracies. Connecting students with communities for thoughtful, reflective engagement in the solution of real problems and current issues will help create citizens to carry us successfully into the 21st century.
