Abstract:
Given the communal nature of residence halls, community service can be integrated easily into the overall expectations of resident advisers, hall government, and resident activities through a series of enabling conditions: exploration (students become involved in a single, one time project); clarification (students' commitment to service is directly related to his or her identification to the living community); realization (student develops a more focused commitment to a particular site, issue, or activity); and activation and internalization (individual forms a deeper, personal, all encompassing level of commitment to service).
