Abstract:
Len Solo, principal at Graham & Parks Alternative Public School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, talks about the service-learning project in his middle school. The planning process involved staff, students, and parents. A community service coordinator worked with community mentors and organizations to help them work with and teach students. The humanities and social studies teachers work together to teach and evaluate the students and the ongoing program. Authentic assessment is done through on-site observations, interviews with site supervisors, and written evaluations.
