Beyond the Ivory Tower

The University of Pennsylvania is successfully integrating community service into its mission and curriculum. The University is working with neighboring West Philadelphia public schools to develop service-learning programs and projects. Students are benefiting as they learn better by doing, the public schools are benefiting with the expertise and manpower from the University, and the community is benefiting through services. This trend toward service is increasing as universities across the nation realize the benefits.
