Abstract:

This is a basic getting started guidebook and training manual that covers all the basics of starting a service-learning program. Topics include a description of service-learning, benefits of service-learning, adapting a curriculum to include service-learning (which covers curriculum integration, logistical issues, reflection, assessment, celebration and evaluation). The authors distinguish between academic service-learning (community activity that is related to the curriculum and involves reflection on work and is part of a course) and volunteerism (community activity that is not related to the curriculum and is for extra credit). Additionally, the authors describe how to adapt a curriculum to include service-learning activities.
