Abstract:
The survival of Catholic schools depends on their inclusion in the national discussion on education. They must be viewed as complementary to -- not replacements for -- public education. The article also discusses the changes in Catholic schools, brought on by enrollment of children from more affluent families, and such schools as a favorable alternative to public schools. Catholic schools are more diverse than most people understand and offer something distinctive to society. Includes 42 bibliographical references.
