Abstract:

To what degree does service-learning enhance measurable learning outcomes among children? Do service-learning settings help to illuminate indicators or evidence of quality as specified in student and teacher standards? These questions, and many others, are explored in this exciting new publication from AACTE. Emerging from the efforts of the Service-Learning and Teacher Education (SLATE) project, a three-year project funded by AACTE and the Corporation for National Service (CNS), this book examines the state of service-learning at the closing of the project in late 2000. It is a compilation of 30 chapters produced by some 50 scholar/practitioners involved in service-learning and teacher education, and focuses on providing teacher educators and practicing professionals with information on the conceptual, research, and application areas of service-learning in preservice teacher education.
