Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine patterns of civic and political involvement developed during political socialization and changes in civic knowledge and attitudes associated with age. Data were drawn from the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's Civic Education Study, which was carried out in two phases, from 1994 to 1998, and in 1997. Findings revealed that when compared with respondents from other countries in the study, U.S. adolescents rate moderate to high in their belief that adults should vote and should engage in other forms of conventional participation and in their stated expectations of their own behavior.
