Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine how many states require college students to take some course in American government, civics, or similar subject matter, through some form of state-level mandate. Findings revealed that nine states require some study of American government, the Constitution, or civics for all students in public higher education; that five of them require study of their respective state constitutions; and that these nine states are geographically concentrated in the deep South, the border states, and the far West.
