Abstract:
This publication provides an overview of youth development theory, examines the disconnect between youth development and civic engagement and reflects on how youth development is evolving in an atmosphere of enthusiasm toward youth engagement and participation. It also describes the process of establishing the Ford Foundation's Youth Leadership for Development Initiative (YLDI), a learning network of sixteen community based organizations, representing pluralistic constituencies, in which young people are actively working for change.
