As part of a grant from the Carnegie Foundation, Engaged Scholars from Campus Compact are visiting community colleges across the country this spring to identify indicators of civic engagement. This paper describes the findings from the Indicators of Engagement Project (IOEP), assessment strategies for measuring the Indicators of Engagement, case examples from institutions, and ideas for applying findings to one's own academic setting.
The paper addresses key research areas uncovered during the first year of the IOEP. These areas will include: (1) civic engagement in and through workforce development; (2) the role of practitioner-adjuncts in civic engagement; (3) community colleges as community-based organizations; and (4) infrastructure to support civic engagement in conjunction with distance learning.
