Abstract: 

Discusses the background and current state of Learn and Serve America. Includes an explanation of grants and funding and how money is distributed among schools, CBOs, higher education, and tribal nations. Learn and Serve grant funded programs are covered, as well as an analysis of the outcomes of funding. During the 2002-2003 program year, Learn and Serve projects reported that they engaged 1,152,059 participants. On average, participants performed 21 hours of service for the program year, with a total reported number of service hours of 10,561,432. In addition, 90,044 teachers, faculty, administrators, and community-based organization staff assisted in these programs.
