Established in 2000, CASSL helps after-school programs incorporate service-learning as a strategy for the healthy development, community engagement and educational success of school children. This paper describes four after-school programs that have successfully incorporated service-learning into their lessons. The four programs are Youth Community Service, Del Norte Kids 1st, Petaluma City Schools Communities and Schools for Career Success, and Dare To Dream. This guide is not meant to be a step-by-step manual or a how-to kit, but rather it is intended to show various ways that service-learning programs have been implemented, share lessons learned, and spark imagination about new ways that service-learning can be integrated into communities.
