Abstract:
This case study examined the sustaining factors of a fully implemented and nationally recognized high school service-learning program that has sustained itself for nine years at a New England high school recognized as a National Service-Learning Leader School. The study described the process of adoption, design, implementation, and paths to institutionalization. The findings indicated that the community service-learning experience was more of a process than a separate educational or adjunct program. A focus on service, understood as promoting community development, was found to be the critical element that enabled overall implementation and enhanced sustainability.
