Abstract:
In recent years, much has been written about the civic responsibilities of America's institutions of higher education toward their communities. Most of what has been written takes an institutional perspective. This article suggests that the view of university-community relations might look quite different from the point of view of those who live in the shadow of a powerful university. The article proposes that community members are more likely to note the role of university as land owner, political force, rich and powerful corporation, and arrogant neighbor than as a civically-engaged responsible member of the community.
