Abstract:
This position paper covers many aspects of civic education including the essential components of civic education such as civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions. It also covers how and where civic education takes place, both in formal instruction and in the informal curriculum. The question of evidence showing the need to improve civic education is considered. Finally, the author discusses the relationship between civic education and character education, and discusses policy recommendations. Includes lengthy bibliography.
