Abstract:
The authors argue that colleges and universities that are committed to service-learning should enter into authentic, sustained partnerships with the communities in which they are located. They propose a framework for partnerships that distinguishes between transactional and transformational relationships, together with a suggestion of a typology for understanding the different levels of depth and complexity of partnerships. Finally, the challenges of developing authentic partnerships and how to address them are discussed.
