Abstract:
This essay considers three things: the development of both community service and service-learning internationally with special attention to reviewing developments in the United Kingdom; ways to research service-learning in comparative higher education and some of the key issues that should be taken into account in conducting this research, including the challenge of analyzing distinction between service-learning and community service in the international context; and how service-learning in higher education, through study abroad and exchange programs, can contribute to the development of a global civil society.
