Abstract:
The author describes a hypothetical school that subscribes to three practices: democratic education, education for social justice, and community service learning. These practices are described in terms of being a philosophy of teaching and learning rather than just a strategy. The article concludes with a discussion of the challenges faced by both individual social studies teachers and society as a whole in bringing more social action into the social studies curriculum.
