Abstract:
The author argues that the civic engagement movement's use of history is not always well considered. Furthermore, by paying closer attention to the historical analogies it uses and examining more closely the contexts out of which successful models of civic engagement grow, it would be better-served. The author identifies two major flaws in the reasoning that higher education must return to it's civic roots to improve the civic education of the public.
