Examines features of successful partnerships and looks at lessons learned over the previous decade. Includes a discussion of the role of community partnerships in the faculty tenure and promotion process, as well as the need for academic institutions to understand and appreciate a community's history and culture. The author also stresses the importance of academic institutions committing to long-term engagements with their communities.
