Abstract:
The authors argue that civic education can be improved by actively involving students in civic service, including political activity. The authors use the context of the Iraq war to argue that in regards to citizenship and political involvement, we cannot build abroad what we don't sustain at home. However, the authors argue, the success schools have seen in engaging students in community service can be a model for more actively engaging young people in meaningful civic service, including political activity.
