Abstract:
In this chapter, the author demonstrates that a democratic mission is the core mission of American Higher Education, and identifies the obstacles that have helped prevent higher education from realizing its democratic mission. In addition, Harkavy proposes a practical strategy by which service-learning can help reduce those obstacles and help higher education realize its democratic mission. (Author)
