Three institutions are examined; the University of Natal-Pietermartizburg in South Africa, St. Francis Xavier University in Canada, and Portland State University in the United States. The use of the Furco rubric is illustrated here as a valuable tool for providing a basis for comparisons across institutions with different contexts and missions. This initial set of international comparisons suggests the high potential for a more comprehensive comparative study that could track the progress of institutions over time, and offer opportunities for mutual learning to further advance our knowledge of how service-learning and civic engagement can be promoted and sustained at institutions of higher education.
