Abstract:
This chapter identifies the extent of civic disengagement among young people and educational institutions and suggests that service-learning is a pathway for civic engagement. Different conceptions of civic engagement are illuminated and linkage to service-learning for each conception is provided. Authors discuss progress and strategies that are in place in both higher education and K-12 settings, and the challenges associated with each level in using service-learning as civically engaged scholarship.
