Abstract:

Active Citizenship Today (ACT) is a service-learning curriculum that helps students learn civic content and citizenship skills. The curriculum consists of 15 lessons linked to the ACT Field Guide, a student handbook on doing a service-learning project. The lessons guide students through the five steps of the ACT Framework: Exploring Your Community; Choosing and Researching a Problem; Evaluating Policy; Examining Options; and Taking Action. The Teacher Handbook also includes sections on: new research and information about civic education, service-learning, and using community resources effectively; how ACT can be implemented as a school- or district-wide program; and how ACT can link to content standards in subject areas such as civics, government, history, language arts, and science.
