Abstract:
This article reviews the findings of the annual national survey of incoming freshmen in respect to students and volunteering. The survey is from the Cooperative Institutional Research Project conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California at Los Angeles. This article points out that a record number of students say they had volunteered at least occasionally during their senior year of high school, and two out of three freshmen believe it is essential or very important to help others who are in difficulty. However, many students did not consider community service to be an important part of their college experience.
