The concepts of service-learning and, more specifically, arts-based service-learning, have evolved over the last 25 years. Art teachers who have extended their classrooms into the community - whether to another school campus or the community-at-large - have already begun to integrate elements of service-learning into their pedagogy. Many facets of the arts should be thought of as meritorious activities that help to preserve cultural significance and authenticity. Service-learning and the arts share an approach to education that promotes authentic, active, community-connected learning. This guide includes lessons for grades kindergarten through 12, divided into K-4th, 5th-8th, and 9th-12th sections. (author)
