As several recent reports have documented, volunteerism among college students is on the rise. According to data released in fall of 2006 from the Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the AmeriCorps national service program, 20 percent more students volunteered in 2005 than did three years earlier. Federal funding calls for millions of dollars less in coming years, meaning AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America programs will have to make financial adjustments. Using the Federal Work Study program to serve off campus, campus incentives for volunteer participation, and service-based scholarships may help students continue to participate in national service programs.
