This research brief examines the relationship between classroom civic learning opportunities in Chicago Public Schools and students' commitment to civic participation. The brief summarizes findings from a longitudinal study of approximately 4,000 juniors in CPS high schools. The authors found that: service-learning combined with a set of other opportunities to learn about societal issues fostered student's commitment to civic participation; and, classroom opportunities had a larger impact on civic commitments than a range of other activities, including after-school programs, school learning climate, the demographics and social capital of students' neighborhoods, and whether students had conversations with their parents/guardians about politics and current events.
