Abstract:
This article looks at the Humanitarian Engineering project at the Colorado School of Mine and their development of a service-learning component as part of the engineering curriculum by offering students a new minor option. Early results suggest that female students, a subpopulation that has traditionally been underrepresented in engineering, select to participate in service-learning activities at a higher rate than do men. The focus of this article is on the widespread impact that the appeal of this curriculum has had on programs across campus. (author)
